Performance
Orbacus has an optimized IIOP protocol stack that can utilize over 99% of network bandwidth under extreme loads. Countless time-critical applications rely on IONA's product every day, from high performance real-time trading applications to network management and straight through processing systems. Unlike CORBA implementations that trade off compliance for performance, by using shortcuts like non-portable stubs, Orbacus is a high performance, fully compliant CORBA implementation.
Flexibility and Adaptability
Most CORBA implementations today are based on an old, monolithic, brittle code base that has been endlessly augmented to track the evolving OMG specification. Since version 1.0, they have been coded as a CORBA implementation bound to a TCP/IP transport, and nothing else. Orbacus provides the means to support other network protocols besides TCP/IP. The Open Communications Interface (OCI) is a transport plug-in framework and TCP/IP is an OCI plug-in provided with Orbacus. So applications are not restricted to using only IIOP because protocols can be "plugged in" without changes to the ORB core.
Examples of these plug-ins are bi-directional IIOP and Free SSL. Besides standard transport plug-ins, we can also provide you with specialized plug-ins for your proprietary protocols. Example candidates for the custom plug-in are SCCP (Signalling Connection Control Part, part of SS.7) or SAAL (Signalling ATM Adaptation Layer).
